About us
About us
We believe that better spaces deliver better outcomes.
Tate + Co was founded in 2007 and for very nearly 20 years the team has been driving the sustainable design agenda. Now recognised as a leader in regenerative architecture, our design philosophy is perhaps more relevant than ever.
Regenerative architecture is a design ethos that aims to create buildings that not only avoid harming the environment but actually improve it and deliver lasting, positive impact to people and planet. We want to create projects which demonstrate how a genuinely regenerative approach can create a better and more resilient outcome for all. Our designs optimise daylight, improve ventilation, introduce natural and, whenever possible, locally-sourced materials and deliver a meaningful connection to the community.
We are expert negotiators of even the most sensitive of settings – places of natural beauty, heritage and cultural significance or sites that are just plain tricky – and are adept at navigating the complex world of planning, design and construction.
But don’t take our word for it.
Our clients have described us as strategic thinkers and they love that we help them unearth the true potential of their projects. We get to the very heart of what matters to define exactly what is needed to deliver their creative, commercial and environmental ambitions.
We genuinely value our client relationships and, through our Client Satisfaction Programme, regularly evaluate our work against their expectations in terms of design, delivery and service. We enjoy working with people, and people like working with us.
- 98% Of our clients would work with us again and said that what they most enjoyed about working with us was our sense of collaboration and enthusiasm.
- 98% Of our clients would recommend us to another potential client.
- 91% Of our clients said that the project met their brief ‘well’ or ‘very well’. The remaining 9% felt it was ‘too early to say’, given the very early stage of their project.
“The Tate + Co team is great at understanding the place. They can work in really difficult conditions. Politically, contextually, environmentally sensitive, their process for delivering in these circumstances is exceptional, second to none.”

Lewis Murray

Lewis completed both his MA (Hons) and MArch at the University of Edinburgh, graduating with distinction.
Lewis brings a thoughtful, research-led approach to design, paired with a hands-on understanding of how things are made—developed through experience working with builders and designers in Edinburgh, fabricating everything from cabins to furniture and fit-outs.
At Tate + Co, Lewis has contributed to a range of projects including Stanbrook Abbey, The Hurlingham Club, Regent’s Park and Cole’s Green, and has been supporting early-stage design and submissions for Knutsford across RIBA Stages 1 and 2. He’s particularly interested in the narrative and cultural dimensions of place-making, and how architecture can respond to context beyond the purely physical.
Lewis’s final thesis project, Interzone, explored the architectural workings of literature and culture across the cities of Tangier and Edinburgh, examining themes of colonialism, subterfuge and ambiguous frontiers. The project received the Edinburgh College of Art’s Sir James Dunbar-Nasmith Prize, as well as the Design Report Award.
Outside the studio, Lewis enjoys cooking, life drawing and sketching – often using these practices to sharpen his eye for composition, materiality and detail.
