Tate+Co was recently featured in the article ‘Gentrification: good or evil?’ by Dominic Lutyens for Mix Interiors magazine.

Alongside Joanna Yarrow of Human Nature and Pedro Gil ARB RIBA of Studio Gil, we put forward thoughts on when gentrification can be successful and how it can, sometimes, end up excluding the very communities it should be serving.

Jerry Tate, founder and director here at Tate+Co, focussed on the importance of democratic access to green spaces, using the example of our 2022 Blossom project for the National Trust in Birmingham (co-designed with studio 8FOLD) which deployed blossom trees in moveable planters that supported a series of community facilities such as benches, games and F&B outlets etc throughout the year.

As well as being embraced by the community of Birmingham (it was cited as one of the best things about the Commonwealth Games despite being outside the compound), the project also had a beautiful afterlife; at the end of 2022 the trees and planters were deployed throughout Birmingham Schools.

Gentrification: good or evil?

The article runs from pages 134-136 in the latest edition of Mix Interiors magazine.

Gentrification can get a bad reputation but if we harness the value it creates, we believe it can be a genuine force for good.

Thank you, Dominic, for curating a very thoughtful piece.
