Andy Baker-Falkner, Director here at Tate+Co, will be presenting at the University Design Forum’s upcoming Reference Visit to  York St John University.

Taking place on 30 October at the highly acclaimed university, Andy will be presenting alongside leaders of the Estates Team to deliver the Creative Centre Case Study: Connecting the campus using a low carbon, flexible building. The event will also include a Q&A session and tour of the Creative Centre.

The afternoon presentation will focus on the Creative Centre. Opened in 2021 and bringing arts, research and practice together under one roof, the building has attracted a diverse student population.

The Creative Centre is at the heart of  York St. John University’s ongoing plans for growth. The building also epitomises the University’s ambitions for sustainability and, as the centre piece of a phased, landscape-led transformation of the campus, it contributes to a new, biodiverse quarter for the City of York.

Low embodied carbon materials, such as glulam and CLT, were used in the construction of the Creative Centre. A ‘fabric-first’ approach, embracing Passivhaus principles, resulted in the building achieving a BREEAM Assessment Excellent rating.

The presentation will explore how the Lord Mayor’s Walk Campus is undergoing a transformation, leveraging its proximity to the history and heritage of the City of York and elevating the student experience. Attendees can also look forward to a deep-dive into the design and delivery process … And the lessons learnt along the way!
